Who we are...
Hello! We are The Wilderness Bohol Philippines. In the year 2021, we started our farm for herbal teas and organic vegetable on the beautiful island of Pangangan in the Southern part of the Philippines. The Wilderness was founded with the idea in mind to produce healthy herbal products in a sustainable way.
We define sustainability through our attempt to respect the nature and through our active contribution to the fight against climate change.
This includes measures to help protect the neighboring fish pen, which is a DENR - protected area. It is the only place on Pangangan Island, where all three endemic mangrove species grow in one place. The fish pen is a breeding place for many species of fish. Many fish eating birds can be found in this area. With thousands of fireflies living in this part of the island, the fish pen is truly a magical place, especially in the evening. Putting all these facts into consideration, we believe that the protection status of the Pangangan fish pen is well deserved.
What our place looks like...
Being situated at the Western end of Pangangan Island The Wilderness is mostly covered by natural vegetation including several flowering plants. That is why we have a natural population of insects, including honeybees, butterflies and dragonflies. Our place has many different species of local birds including the Philippines Eagle. In order to preserve the natural variety of species in The Wilderness we try to further reduce and/or reuse waste especially plastic waste. All organic waste in The Wilderness is either composted or fed to our animals.
Due to the isolated location of The Wilderness at the end of Pangangan Island, we enjoy a fresh sea breeze from Cebu Strait most of the time that is why our air has basically no pollution and no dust. You can devour that in every cup of our tea.
Lastly, the goal.

How we work: Sustainably Independent and Well Prepared
The Wilderness Bohol Philippines is one of the pioneers of sustainable and independent power supply, water supply with desalination and we run the first local 12V house in the whole area and one of the first Starlink in the Philippines.
1) Solar Energy Island
Being one of the pioneers of sustainable energy generation in Bohol we started running our power supply from solar energy only in January 2021. The first system on 48 V with 200 ah LiFePo4 storage is still sufficient for the main building with its different devices for cooling and refrigeration. Yet it has produced a total of 4,5 MWh and is running fine and reliable.
Later sxstems on 12V diversified the power supply for specialized uses. One system on 12 V with 100 ah lead-gel storage supplies the different pumps of our water supply system.
The second system on 12 V with 200 ah LiFePo4 supplies our 12 V house. These specialized 12 V systems were not only built to showcase the technology here i the rural context of Pangangan Island but to create systems with higher power conversion efficiency. This is due to the supply with the same 12V DC current which is also stored in the battery - so no inversion or conversion losses.

2) Independent Water Supply
Like in many island situations the proximity to the edge of the island socle does not allow to find sweet water in the underground.
Municipal water is not really a viable option due to it's saturation with lime and reliability in supply. Therefore we decided to develop the catchment and storage of rainwater as main souce of water supply
in The Wilderness. Apart from that a well was built into the rock underground. This brackish water will soon be desalinated and utilused to supple our use-water storage from rain. more details here later
